President's Message

As we roll into 2012 and I step into the position of President of our Chapter, I feel humbled and want to take a moment to thank you the members of this Chapter for placing your confidence in me.  Time has flown since Denny Key first called me in 2007 and asked me to serve as the Chapter Secretary.  I was newly designated at the time and still had the bitter taste in my mouth from all the hard work required for the MAI designation.  I reluctantly accepted his invitation and have been very glad that I did.  It has been a pleasure getting to know and working with the other Chapter leaders over the last few years.  Our Chapter is really made up of outstanding people, some of the nicest I have met.

I want to encourage those that are relatively new to our profession and Chapter to become involved because what is happening and planned for the Appraisal Institute will affect your professional and financial future.  Your involvement with this Chapter is the most direct way you have to have your say be heard by the Appraisal Institute leadership.  Significant changes are planned for the Appraisal Institute that will directly affect your future professional path.  Those new to our profession and existing Associate and Affiliate members need to go to the Appraisal Institute website and read about these changes which include the “Candidate for Designation Program”. This will be the topic of discussion at the first Associate Guidance Meeting in Mobile on March the 8th.   Please let me or other members of the Chapter Leadership know if you have any feedback.

In 2011 the Appraisal Institute designated 298 members (216 MAI’s with 54 MAI’s being international and 82 SRA’s).  Unfortunately, none of these new designated members were from our Chapter.  I want to encourage our Associate members to attend the Associate Guidance meetings that Hayden Scott, MAI has worked diligently on in order to help inform you of what is required and how to proceed on your designation path.  Over the last few years the Appraisal Institute has really made a helpful push in order to help its Associate Members complete the path to designation.  All you Associate members need to do is reach out to National.  Go to the website; see all the tools offered to help you along the way.  I want to encourage you to take the leap, knock-out the last one or two requirements and get your designation.  There is no time like the present!  Trust me; you will be glad you did.

In closing, I want to thank our past President, Melissa Calloway, SRA for her leadership this past year.  For those of you that do not know, Missy will be a Discussion Leader at LDAC this next year, one of only four from across the nation.  This is quite an honor.  I must also thank our outstanding Executive Director, Pam Paulk, who keeps us all on track.

I hope to see you all at our first Chapter Meeting of the year which will be in Mobile on March 8, 2012 the day before our first seminar, “Thinking Outside the Form: Tools, Techniques and Opportunities for Residential Appraisers.”

May we all have a healthy, happy and prosperous 2012.

Respectfully submitted,

Allen J. Sasso, MAI
